Media Release:

Re: The Negative Portrayal of Imam Hassan Ali on the Newsday Newspaper.

Waajihatul Islaamiyyah (The Islamic Front) has Once again, seen the need for the public to call into question the motives and underlying intentions of the leadership of the Police Service of Trinidad and Tobago. In the first instance it appears that the TTPS is endeavoring to move its focus from protecting the citizenry and instead into selective and discretionary photography services for the media industry of Trinidad and Tobago.

This religious leader pictured in the Newsday, (See Article Attached) is charged for a minor offence involving a behavioural allegation and here he is being photographed and portrayed like a dangerous animal. The picture taken by the "photo-takeouters" of the TTPS even publicly portrays the citizen's age on the board, clearly written by a person who may have been forced into the protective forces.

What has happened to the lawful protocols of, innocent until proven guilty? How come other persons like Ministers (from the current government) Businessmen ( charged for possession of illegal gun and drugs), former policemen (charged for extortion and bribery), step children of ministers (charged for drug trafficking), licensing employees and other prominent criminals are not being placed against white boards and photographed with their age for the media? Is this a particular and specialized treatment that is reserved for persons of specific ethnic and religious groups?

Waajihatul Islaamiyyah (The Islamic Front) have seen a growing pattern of instances where civil society leaders are being targeted by the state and presented with every opportunity in a negative light. The civil society's moral suasion on the public has impacted many an election in the bygone years. As we approach the general election year we can expect to see all manner of attempts to sway or force the public into retaining a group of 21st century dictatorial leaders whose intention is nothing short of oppression for the wider population.
