Media Release:

Re: Imported Chicken

Waajihatul Islaamiyyah (The Islamic Front) does not agree with the president of the poultry association's; Robin Phillip who in a report by CNC3's Judy Kanhai in it's news segment; Business Watch called for proper standards for imported chicken to avoid cases where chicken older than 6 months are sold in T&T. Waajihatul Islaamiyyah (The Islamic Front) instead is calling for the total ban of imported chicken coming into this country.

This imported chicken which was referred to as pet meat by the poultry association in a 2016 JSC hearing on Food Fraud, does not provide for a healthy alternative to our fresh, healthier, wholesome brand. Our birds is killed in such a way to allow most of the blood to drain from the body and at the same time limit struggling to prevent damage to the corpse. This process is the recommended accepted standard - a standard which is only offered by our Halal establishments - as opposed to the imported chicken, where the birds is electrocuted causing cardiac arrest which stops the blood flow. According to the World Health Organization, in outbreak areas for H5N1 avian influenza virus ("avian flu"), reports of "a few human cases" potentially linked avian flu to the consumption of poultry and meat dishes containing blood; not drained properly.

Waajihatul Islaamiyyah (The Islamic Front) contends that the ban importation of chicken, according to the Minister of Agriculture would not only save 15,000 jobs but in addition would provide for a healthier lifestyle and would create opportunities for our poultry farmers to improve and expand their operations thereby advancing productions for export.

Waajihatul Islaamiyyah (The Islamic Front) is calling on the Chief Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health to state clearly its' position on its Food Safety Policy. From the information put forward, the Government and its' relevant authorities should consider the health and welfare of its citizens and move to immediately ban the importation of chicken.
